DOE Releases Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap

The Industrial Innovation Initiative (I3) released the following statement regarding the Department of Energy’s Industrial Decarbonization Road Map earlier this week. This statement may be attributed to Gabrielle Habeeb, Project Manager for the Industrial Innovation Initiative:

“This week, the Department of Energy (DOE) released the DOE Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap. The announcement came during Wednesday’s industrial decarbonization roundtable, hosted by U.S. Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, and White House National Climate Advisor, Gina McCarthy. The roadmap rightfully acknowledges the critical role the industrial and manufacturing sectors play in the U.S. economy and the need to holistically address the sizable emissions profile of these sectors. Targeting high-emitting industries, such as chemicals, refining, and iron and steel, the DOE takes a similar approach to the one outlined in the Industrial Innovation Initiative’s policy blueprint, by looking at cross-cutting solutions to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The roadmap breaks these solutions into four categories: Low-Carbon Fuels, Energy Efficiency, Industrial Electrification, and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage. These categories closely align with the Initiative’s decarbonization pillars, namely Hydrogen, Energy Efficiency, Electrification, and Carbon Management. Paired with recent legislative measures in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, federal action to decarbonize industry has never been greater. This roadmap presents a clear commitment to addressing industrial emissions while supporting American jobs and affected communities. It is heartening to see the DOE take this critical step in supporting a cleaner and more prosperous industrial sector while setting forth a comprehensive agenda to achieve our nation’s climate goals.”
