The Industrial Innovation Initiative (I3) released the following statement today regarding the Department of Energy’s announcement that thirty-three projects were selected to receive up to $6 billion under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act. The statement may be attributed to David Soll, Industrial Decarbonization Manager, Great Plains Institute:
“Robust federal support to spur industrial decarbonization across multiple sectors is critical to ensure the US meets its energy, environment, and economic goals, which is why the foundational Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act provided the industrial sector with unprecedented support. Now, thanks to these laws, 33 projects have been announced across twenty states.
The $6 billion in funding marks a critical milestone in the administration’s multi-faceted effort to reduce emissions and create well-paying manufacturing jobs. According to DOE Secretary Granholm, these projects can create “replicable” and “scalable” solutions to a range of industrial decarbonization challenges. Additionally, the DOE-selected projects rightly prioritize community engagement and working with labor partners as core components of successful project development.
These projects will substantially reduce emissions and criteria air pollutants while generating tens of thousands of jobs at industrial facilities across the country. The Department’s dual emphasis on technological innovation and accelerating deployment of proven technologies such as industrial heat pumps reflects the core recommendations of the Industrial Innovation Initiative’s 2024 Federal Policy Blueprint, released in late January.
The funding announced today represents a critical down payment by the federal government to support decarbonizing the industrial sector. As the I3 blueprint underscores, the federal government must continue to build on these types of investments to achieve midcentury climate goals.”
