The Industrial Innovation Initiative (I3) released the following statement today regarding the Biden Administration’s new suite of actions to advance industrial decarbonization across American manufacturing. This statement may be attributed to Gabrielle Habeeb, Project Manager for the Industrial Innovation Initiative:
“The suite of actions announced by the Biden-Harris Administration today marks a commitment to American leadership in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors and support for clean domestic manufacturing.
The industrial sector is essential to jobs and prosperity, producing materials that are central to many aspects of our everyday lives, from concrete and steel to chemicals and paper. However, heavy industry remains one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize, accounting for approximately one third of total domestic carbon emissions. As the US begins to implement the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the procurement of low-carbon building materials, such as steel and concrete, and support for the technologies and policies which make industrial decarbonization and clean manufacturing possible, will be of critical importance.
A primary challenge to decarbonizing industry lies in the variety of industry types, facility sizes, and industrial processes at work. In November of last year, the Industrial Innovation Initiative released a Federal and State Policy Blueprint outlining a suite of recommendations to address this challenge and put US industry on a path toward decarbonization by 2050. This blueprint identified several technological and policy solutions such as low- and zero- carbon hydrogen, carbon management, and low-carbon procurement standards, which are cross-cutting and have the potential to realize widespread decarbonization in the industrial sector.
Today, the Administration shared several near-term actions that will play a pivotal role in organizing industrial innovation and decarbonization both across the federal government overall and within specific agencies. Notably, underscoring the clean hydrogen provisions included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, establishing a Buy Clean Task Force to guide the procurement of low-carbon materials for construction projects, the advancement of carbon-based trade policies to support clean steel and aluminum manufacturing, guidance for the deployment of carbon management, and new initiatives to advance industrial decarbonization with a focus on American workers and communities.
Through these actions, the Administration is demonstrating the value of an interdisciplinary approach to industrial decarbonization – one that I3’s diverse coalition of industry and power companies, environmental and non-governmental organizations, and labor unions, is working to advance.”
